Chemistry Lessons
Lesson Type: Lab Activity
NGSS Nature of Science Threads: Scientific Investigations Use a Variety of Methods, Science Knowledge Is Based on Empirical Evidence, and Science Models, Laws, Mechanisms, and Theories Explain Natural Phenomena
This lesson is placed approximately halfway through the unit on Gas Laws, which focus on kinetic molecular theory and the behavior of gas particles. In this laboratory experiment, students try to crush empty soda cans using only atmospheric pressure (not their hands). They are provided with initial instructions for safety and to build familiarity with the lab equipment; students then have to devise how to crush the can even further. Finally, students use the data they have collected in the laboratory and relate it to the concepts and equations learned previously in class.
